Will Dems Strategy on Coats Backfire

Ever since word leaked last week that former Sen. Dan Coats may run against Evan Bayh for his old seat, various Democrat organizations have been in full-on offensive mode. Whether their strategy is to dissuade him from running or to defeat him in the primary isn’t clear, but one thing is: Democrats and Evan Bayh are scared at the prospect of running against Dan Coats. If they thought Coats would be an easy win, they would have saved their oppo files for a potential general election battle; instead, they are dumping them out to the media as fast as possible to try and keep him from getting through the primary.

But Democrats may have another reason for wanting to dump this info now, rather than waiting for the general: every criticism they’ve leveled against Coats applies equally or more so to Evan Bayh.

1. Residency? We covered that the other day in a post about how Bayh grew up in Maryland, went to law school and currently resides in Virginia (and has for awhile), and had to convince the state Supreme Court that even though he didn’t live here he was a resident and eligible to be Governor. But now newspapers are starting to bring up the fact that Bayh doesn’t live here again, like this…
